Transmission Rebuild & Overhaul
A rebuild means your transmission comes out, comes apart and every worn component is replaced — clutches, bands, seals, bearings and bushings — before precise reassembly and road testing.
When wear has spread beyond a single component, a rebuild (also called an overhaul) restores the transmission to factory-grade condition. We remove the unit, disassemble it completely, hot-tank and inspect every hard part, and replace all friction material, seals, gaskets, bearings and any damaged gears or drums. The valve body is inspected and recalibrated, and we install a remanufactured torque converter as standard practice — reusing a worn converter is the most common cause of repeat failure.
Rebuilding keeps your original, factory-matched case and calibration, which is why we — and most experienced transmission specialists — prefer it over a used unit of unknown history. It is also significantly cheaper than a new transmission from the dealer, often by half or more.
Every rebuild is documented with photos of the damage we found, so you can see exactly what you paid for. The finished unit is refilled with the manufacturer-specified fluid, relearned with a factory-level scan tool and road tested against OEM shift specifications.
How we do it
- 1
Removal & teardown
The transmission is removed, drained and fully disassembled. Every hard part is cleaned and measured against factory tolerances.
- 2
Photo-documented inspection
We photograph the wear we find and review it with you before proceeding — no mystery, no padding.
- 3
Reassembly with new internals
New clutches, steels, bands, seals, gaskets, bushings and bearings, plus a remanufactured torque converter and any failed hard parts.
- 4
Calibration & road test
Factory relearn procedure, fluid to spec, then a full road test with live data logging to verify shift quality.
Rebuild & Overhaul — common questions
How much does a transmission rebuild cost?
Most rebuilds in the GTA fall between $2,800 and $4,500 depending on the vehicle and how much hard-part damage we find. CVTs and European units can run higher. You receive a firm written quote after teardown inspection, and we never proceed without your approval.
Rebuild vs. used transmission — which is better?
A rebuild renews every wear item and comes with a strong warranty; a used unit carries unknown mileage and history. Where a low-mileage used unit makes financial sense, we will offer it as an option — but for most vehicles a rebuild is the more reliable long-term choice.
How long will a rebuilt transmission last?
Built to factory specifications and maintained with regular fluid service, a properly rebuilt transmission should last as long as the original did — often 150,000 km or more.
How long does a rebuild take?
Typically three to five business days including teardown, parts, reassembly and road testing. We keep you updated by text throughout.
