CVT Transmission Repair
Many general shops refuse CVT work outright. We diagnose, service, repair and rebuild continuously variable transmissions every week — including the Nissan and Subaru units other shops turn away.
Continuously variable transmissions use a steel belt or chain running between two variable pulleys instead of fixed gears. They are efficient and smooth — until the belt, pulleys, valve body or control module wear. Because CVTs are so different from conventional automatics, many general repair shops simply decline the work, and dealers frequently quote full replacement at $5,000–$8,000 as the only option.
We invest in the tooling, fluids and training CVTs demand. That means proper pressure testing, factory-level scan data, the exact CVT fluid your unit requires (using the wrong fluid destroys a CVT quickly), and the experience to know which failures are repairable and which units genuinely need replacement or rebuild.
CVT demand in the GTA has surged — Nissan's Xtronic units remain the most common failure we see (Altima, Rogue, Sentra, Murano, Pathfinder, Versa, Qashqai and Infiniti QX60), followed by Subaru Lineartronic, Honda, Toyota and Mitsubishi CVTs. If you have been told 'we don't touch CVTs' — call us.
How we do it
- 1
CVT-specific diagnosis
Factory-level scan, pressure testing and fluid inspection — CVT wear leaves distinctive metal signatures we know how to read.
- 2
Honest triage
Some CVT faults are valve body, solenoid or fluid-related and fully repairable. We tell you the truth about which category yours falls into.
- 3
Repair, rebuild or replace
From fluid exchanges with genuine CVT fluid, to valve body work, to complete rebuilds or replacement units — priced side by side.
CVT Repair — common questions
Can a CVT transmission actually be repaired?
Often, yes. Valve body faults, solenoid failures, fluid degradation and some bearing issues are repairable without replacing the unit. Belt and pulley damage usually calls for a rebuild or replacement — we confirm which with proper diagnosis before quoting.
Why did my dealer quote $7,000 for a new CVT?
Dealers typically replace complete units rather than repairing them. Depending on the failure, a repair or rebuild through a specialist can cost thousands less. It is always worth a second opinion before authorizing a dealer replacement.
My Nissan CVT failed — was there a recall or settlement?
Nissan has faced multiple CVT class actions, and Canadian settlements and extended warranties have applied to certain models and years. Coverage windows for many owners have expired, which is why so many now pay out of pocket — we can advise on what applies to your vehicle when you call.
How often should CVT fluid be changed?
Every 50,000–60,000 km in GTA stop-and-go driving, regardless of what the 'lifetime fluid' marketing says. Fresh, correct-specification fluid is the single cheapest way to extend CVT life.
