Toyota & Lexus Transmission Repair

UA80 8-speed defects now facing multiple class actions

Toyota's reputation for bulletproof drivetrains has met a real exception: the UA80 eight-speed automatic. Since late 2025, at least three class-action lawsuits have alleged the UA80 fails early — torque converter shudder, whining bearings and sudden failures — with out-of-warranty repairs commonly quoted around $7,000 at dealers.

We diagnose and repair UA80 units and the rest of the Toyota/Lexus range, including 'lifetime fluid' units whose fluid should absolutely not be left for life. If your Highlander whines or your Sienna shudders, get it documented and diagnosed early — small problems in these units become big ones quickly.

The known weak points

UA80E / UA80F 8-speed automatic

Torque converter shudder, high-pitched whine from bearing wear, harsh downshifts and premature internal failure. Subject of multiple class actions filed December 2025 – February 2026.

Direct Shift-CVT (K120)

Launch-gear-equipped CVT in Corolla and Corolla Cross; early units show belt noise and hesitation complaints.

U660E/U760E 6-speed

Higher-mileage shudder and valve body wear in Camry, RAV4 and Sienna generations before the 8-speed.

Watch for these symptoms

  • High-pitched whine that rises with speed
  • Shudder between 40–120 km/h under light throttle
  • Harsh or clunky 2–1 downshifts coming to a stop
  • Hesitation then surge when accelerating
  • Transmission overheat or check engine light

How we fix it — properly

  1. 1

Documented diagnosis with live data — invaluable if you pursue a goodwill claim, CAMVAP arbitration or class-action remedy later.

  2. 2

Fluid exchanges with genuine Toyota WS fluid, the single best preventative step for 'lifetime fluid' units.

  3. 3

Torque converter replacement and valve body repair for shudder cases — far less than dealer unit replacement.

  4. 4

Complete rebuilds with updated components when internal wear is confirmed, backed by written warranty.

Toyota & Lexus owners ask us

Is there a recall on the Toyota 8-speed transmission?

No safety recall as of mid-2026 — the UA80 issues are the subject of civil class actions and customer-support campaigns for certain components. That makes independent documentation of your failure even more valuable. We provide written findings with every diagnosis.

My Highlander whines but the dealer says it is normal. Is it?

A faint gear noise can be normal; a rising whine that tracks road speed usually is not, and it is one of the documented UA80 complaints. A one-hour diagnostic with a comparison road test settles it.

Should Toyota 'lifetime' WS fluid be changed?

Yes — every 60,000–80,000 km in GTA driving. Every UA80 we have opened with burnt fluid tells the same story. It is inexpensive insurance on a $7,000 unit.

Driving one of these? Get ahead of it.

A one-hour diagnostic now beats a four-figure surprise later — and the fee is credited toward any repair.
