Lineartronic CVT shudder and chain wear
Subaru's Lineartronic CVT is better engineered than most — a chain-drive design that Subaru stood behind with a warranty extension to 10 years/160,000 km on many 2010–2018 models after early failures. Those extensions have expired for most owners, and the units now arriving at our shop show the classic pattern: torque converter shudder, chain whine and valve body wear.
Because every Subaru is all-wheel drive, we also service the rest of the driveline — front and rear differentials and the CVT's integrated transfer clutch — which many general shops are not equipped to test properly.
The known weak points
Lineartronic TR580 / TR690 CVT
Torque converter lockup shudder, chain and pulley wear, valve body faults and parking pawl issues. Warranty extension (campaign) applied to many 2010–2018 vehicles, now lapsed for most.
AWD transfer clutch
Binding or shudder in tight turns when the transfer clutch or its solenoid wears — often misdiagnosed as a differential fault.
