Nissan & Infiniti Transmission Repair

Xtronic CVT failures — the most common repair we see

No brand sends more customers through our door than Nissan. The Jatco-built Xtronic CVT used across most of the Nissan and Infiniti lineup has one of the highest documented failure rates of any modern transmission — Automobile Protection Association data showed more than 5% of units failing within 5 years or 100,000 km, and class actions on both sides of the border have forced Nissan into settlements and extended warranties.

Most of those warranty extensions have now expired, which leaves owners facing dealer replacement quotes of $5,000–$8,000. We repair, rebuild and replace Nissan CVTs every week, usually for thousands less — and we will tell you honestly when a repair is not worth it.

The known weak points

Jatco Xtronic CVT (RE0F10A / RE0F11A and variants)

Belt and pulley wear, valve body failures, overheating and premature bearing whine. Heat is the killer — cooler capacity is marginal in stop-and-go GTA traffic.

CVT8 (larger sedans and crossovers)

Shudder from torque-converter lockup and degraded fluid; chain wear at higher mileage.

Model years are indicative, based on published complaints, bulletins and litigation — condition varies by vehicle and maintenance history.

Watch for these symptoms

  • Shudder or vibration accelerating from a stop
  • Whining or droning that rises with road speed
  • RPM flare without acceleration ('rubber-band' feel)
  • Hesitation, then a clunk, when pulling away hot
  • Limp mode or reduced power on the highway
  • Overheat message in summer traffic

How we fix it — properly

  1. 1

CVT-specific diagnosis with factory-level scan data and pressure testing — we confirm whether the fault is fluid, valve body, or belt/pulley before anyone talks replacement.

  2. 2

Genuine NS-2/NS-3 specification fluid services that measurably extend the life of healthy units.

  3. 3

Valve body repair and replacement for shudder and pressure faults — a fraction of unit replacement cost.

  4. 4

Complete CVT rebuilds and quality remanufactured or verified low-mileage replacement units, installed with cooler flush and relearn, backed by written warranty.

Nissan & Infiniti owners ask us

Was my Nissan covered by the CVT class action?

Several settlements have covered specific models and years — most recently 2015–2018 Murano and 2016–2018 Maxima, finalized in 2025 — typically with claim deadlines and warranty extensions that have since lapsed for many owners. Bring your VIN and we will help you understand what applied to your vehicle.

Should I just replace my Nissan CVT with another one?

Not automatically. Replacements from the dealer fail the same way if the cooling problem and fluid schedule are not addressed. When we rebuild or replace one, we address cooling and set a realistic fluid interval, which is why ours last.

Is a used Nissan with a CVT worth buying?

It can be, if the price reflects the risk and the fluid has been serviced. We offer pre-purchase transmission inspections — a small fee that can save you a $6,000 surprise.

Driving one of these? Get ahead of it.

A one-hour diagnostic now beats a four-figure surprise later — and the fee is credited toward any repair.
