Hyundai & Kia Transmission Repair

IVT/CVT failures and dual-clutch (DCT) trouble

Hyundai and Kia's rapid growth came with growing pains in transmissions. The IVT (their chain-type CVT) in Forte, Elantra, Venue and Seltos has documented early failures — some at just 20,000–40,000 km — and their dry dual-clutch (DCT) units in Veloster, Tucson and Sonata Eco generated shudder and hesitation complaints that led to extended warranties in some markets.

We repair, rebuild and replace IVTs, DCTs and the conventional 6- and 8-speed automatics across the Hyundai/Kia/Genesis range, and we can advise whether your vehicle's issue falls under any active warranty extension before you spend a dollar with us.

The known weak points

IVT (chain-type CVT)

Chain and pulley wear, whine and sudden failures in 2019+ compact models; software updates address some early-shudder complaints.

7-speed dry DCT (D7UF1)

Clutch shudder, overheat warnings in stop-and-go and hesitation from a stop in Veloster, Tucson, Sonata Eco and Kona.

8-speed wet DCT (N DCT / Santa Cruz, Sorento)

Newer units with early reports of harsh low-speed behaviour; fluid service is critical.

Watch for these symptoms

  • Whine or rattle from an IVT, especially cold
  • Sudden loss of drive at low mileage
  • DCT shudder pulling away or creeping in traffic
  • 'Transmission hot' warnings in stop-and-go
  • Hesitation, then a lurch, from a stop

How we fix it — properly

  1. 1

IVT diagnosis with realistic guidance — some units are repairable, others are better replaced under warranty; we help you pursue the right path.

  2. 2

DCT clutch replacement and mechatronic service with proper break-in and adaptation procedures.

  3. 3

Conventional automatic rebuilds for Sorento, Sportage, Santa Fe and Genesis models.

  4. 4

Pre-purchase inspections for used Hyundai/Kia — cheap insurance given the IVT history.

Hyundai & Kia owners ask us

My Kia Forte transmission failed at low mileage — is that covered?

Possibly. Hyundai/Kia powertrain warranties and goodwill programs have covered many IVT failures, but coverage depends on year, mileage and ownership history. We will help you understand your position before recommending paid repair.

Is the Hyundai DCT shudder normal?

Mild creep vibration is inherent to dry dual-clutch design; pronounced shudder or overheat warnings are not. Clutch replacement with updated parts resolves it.

Should I avoid buying a used car with an IVT?

Not necessarily — but have it inspected and budget realistically. We offer pre-purchase transmission inspections for exactly this case.

Driving one of these? Get ahead of it.

A one-hour diagnostic now beats a four-figure surprise later — and the fee is credited toward any repair.
