Honda & Acura Transmission Repair
V6 automatic wear and newer CVT concerns
Honda builds excellent engines and mostly good transmissions — with famous exceptions. The V6 automatics of the 2000s (Odyssey, Pilot, Accord V6, Acura MDX/TL) earned a reputation for burned clutch packs and torque converter failures that still generates rebuild work today. Newer Hondas moved to CVTs and, in some models, the ZF 9-speed with its own drivability quirks.
We service the full range: classic V6 automatic rebuilds, Honda CVT fluid services and repairs using genuine HCF-2 fluid, and 9-speed adaptation and mechatronic work for Pilot, Odyssey and Acura models.
The known weak points
Honda 5-speed V6 automatics (BAYA/B97A family)
Torque converter shudder, third-clutch burnout and cooler contamination — the classic Odyssey/Pilot failure at 150,000 km+.
Honda CVT
Generally more robust than Nissan's, but shudder and judder appear when fluid service is neglected; software updates matter.
ZF 9HP 9-speed (Pilot, Odyssey, MDX, TLX)
Harsh low-speed shifts, hesitation and mechatronic faults; adaptation resets and updates resolve many complaints, hardware the rest.

Watch for these symptoms
- Shudder at light throttle around 60–100 km/h (V6 lockup)
- Slipping or flare on the 2–3 shift
- CVT judder from a stop, especially when cold
- 9-speed: clunky low-speed shifts, delayed engagement
- Warning light with transmission overheat message

Honda & Acura owners ask us
Is the Honda CVT as bad as Nissan's?
No. Honda's CVT has proven considerably more durable. Its main enemy is neglected fluid — serviced on schedule with genuine HCF-2, most Honda CVTs live long lives. Skip the service and they judder like anything else.
My older Odyssey shudders on the highway — worth fixing?
If the body and engine are healthy, usually yes: a converter and clutch repair or rebuild is far cheaper than replacing a well-kept van. We will inspect and give you the honest math.
Do you handle Acura as well?
Yes — Acura shares Honda drivetrains, and we service everything from legacy TL 5-speeds to current 9- and 10-speed units.
Driving one of these? Get ahead of it.
A one-hour diagnostic now beats a four-figure surprise later — and the fee is credited toward any repair.
