8-speed 'Chevy shudder' and 6-speed wear
Ask any GM owner about the 'Chevy shudder' and they will know exactly what you mean. The 8L90 and 8L45 eight-speeds used across Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Camaro and Corvette produced a shudder so widespread that GM issued fluid-change service bulletins and faced class-action litigation across North America.

The known weak points
8L90 / 8L45 8-speed
Torque converter clutch shudder ('Chevy shudder'), harsh shifts and valve body wear. GM's own TSBs prescribe a full fluid exchange with updated Mobil 1 HP fluid; advanced cases need converter replacement.
6L80 / 6L90 6-speed
Pressure regulator bore wear, harsh 1–2 shifts and converter failures in Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe and vans at higher mileage.
6T70 / 6T75 / 6T40 6-speed (FWD)
Wave-plate and clutch failures in Traverse, Acadia, Enclave, Equinox and Malibu — often sudden loss of a gear range.

Can the Chevy shudder really be fixed with a fluid change?
In early cases, yes — GM's own bulletin prescribes a complete exchange with the updated Mobil 1 HP fluid, and it works when the converter clutch has not yet worn. Once wear is advanced, the converter needs replacement. We can tell you which stage yours is at.
My Traverse suddenly lost reverse — is that repairable?
That is the classic 6T75 wave-plate failure. It is very repairable, and considerably cheaper than a replacement vehicle. It does require the unit to come out and apart.
